Why The Sports Card Market is the Real Deal for Investing

Sports Card Collection

Most of us grew up collecting baseball cards. We spent all of our money on cards at flea markets, card shows and the corner stores. We couldn’t wait for the day when the new Beckett price guide arrived in our mail box to see if our cards went up…or down 🙁 For us 40 year olds, as years went by we entered the “real world “ with college and actual jobs, the sports card market was pretty much a thing of the past as we finally had bills to pay. Other than bringing back cool memories when we look through our collections, they basically just sat in a box or storage unit somewhere…and then fast forward to today where out of nowhere, BOOM, it’s back baby. But this time, real money is being made overnight while still enjoying the thrill of collecting, like when we were kids. On August 22nd, a record breaking $3.9 million was paid for a Mike Trout 1/1 Superfractor in an auction, eclipsing the previous record of $3.1 million paid for the T206 Honus Wagner. The Trout card was originally purchase by Vegas Dave for $400k just two yeas ago. Insane ROI! What Made the Sports … Continue reading

How Creating a Vision Board Can Manifest Everything You Want In Your Life

Have you made your vision board yet? It’s such a fun, simple project for any age when looking to accomplish goals in your life….and it definitely works.  Doesn’t matter if you are 5 or 55, it’s never too late to visualize what you want for the future. Although you can make one at any time of the year, most people like fresh starts and the beginning of the year is a great time to make yours to set your short term and long term goals for the new year. I’ve made vision boards since college and watched my goals come true over the years. No dream is too big or too small. The theory is that “you become what you think about”. If you visualize something everyday, it’s more likely to come into your life. This is also called “The Law of Attraction”…and vision boards are the best way to make this happen! My vision boards consists of people I want to work with and meet, career goals, family goals, philanthropic activities, how I want to look, how I want to spend my free time, places to visit, foods to eat, quotes to live by, things that inspire me and … Continue reading

My 25 Bold Sports Predictions for the Next Five Years

So much debate and controversy in the sports world these days, which makes it a never ending topic. Sometimes things move fast, other times we wonder why it never happened. Well, here are my predictions in the sports world for the next five years. As I’m writing this on 8/3/2018, it will be fun to revisit this on 8/3/2023 to see which came true. I’m gonna put in my iPhone calendar now as a reminder 🙂 Ironically #83 is my lucky number that I wore in football and baseball. Let’s see what happens! Seattle and Las Vegas will be the next cities to get an NBA Expansion team.  Memphis Grizzles and the Dallas Mavericks will move to the NBA East The Pittsburgh Steelers will play the Los Angeles Rams in the 2019 Super Bowl There will be Sports Betting kiosks at every stadium and arena around the country Fans will be able to be Virtual Reality courtside season tickets to watch their favorite team College players will finally get paid (something) after the universities make soo much money off them More professional players will create their own brands competing with the likes of the big shoe and apparel companies Pete … Continue reading

Growing Up a Die Hard Sports Fan Led to My Entrepreneurial Destiny

I believe certain things are in our DNA, especially what we were destined to do. I grew up in Woodbridge, New Jersey where I was basically born with a baseball in my hand. Here is a picture to prove it. At the age of 5, I went to kindergarten with an NFL lunchbox and when the teacher said to bring in a photo of someone we loved, I brought in a 1982 Danny White Topps football card. Around this age, my Dad also took me to NY Yankees, NY Mets and NJ Devils games and if the game ran too late, I even got to miss school the next day. Sports became a huge influence in my life. I started collecting baseball cards, NFL Huddle dolls, bobble heads, game programs, posters, sticker books, vintage shirts, mini helmets and anything sports related. My entire room turned into a sports shrine, and pretty much remains the same today. My first entrepreneurial experiences happened around 8 years old when I had a paper route in Woodbridge, NJ, shoveled snow for neighbors in the winter, raked leaves in the fall and went door to door singing Christmas Carols during the Holidays. I also played … Continue reading

How My Orlando City Soccer Jersey Refound Love in Dallas for One Lucky Couple from Florida

I’ve always loved the way sports brings people together. There is an instant bond when one fans meets another fan, especially when in a different city. A hat, jersey or shirt immediately shows your team loyalty to another die hard fan, creating that trust. But on one day at the KatyTrail IceHouse in Dallas, Texas that went to a whole new level. I wanted to share this story for a while but now seems to be the perfect time as you will find out why. About a year ago I decided to wear my purple Orlando City Soccer jersey to Katy Trail IceHouse, a very popular outdoor patio BBQ hang out. I went with my buddy Derek Shaw who jokingly said that nobody will know who that jersey is, which is very popular in Orlando, the city I grew up and started my companies.  I explained to Derek how Orlando City Soccer was all the buzz in OTown right now. We meet up with another Orlando friend of mine there named Andrea Kelly who had a picnic table saved for the group. As we got there, I immediately had three people come up to me saying “Sweet jersey, are you from … Continue reading

The Best Ways for Young Entrepreneurs to Break Into the Sports Industry

Get Your Foot in the Door If your goal is to work for a professional sports team, you might have to do what ever it takes to get in there. So many young college graduates salivate over the chance to work for a professional franchise and the opportunities can be limited at times. If you have to start in the mailroom, offer to be someone’s assistant or make cold calls selling season tickets, you have to be willing to do the dirty work at first. Call and email the HR directors at the team and try to schedule a face-to-face meeting. I have a good buddy, Thomas Smith, who started sweeping floors for the Los Angeles Clippers at 16 years old and now he’s one of the go-to guys there at just 23 years old. As in any business, you gotta work yourself up the corporate ladder. Be Around the Games, Major Events and Parties You have to put yourself in the best opportunities to meet people already in the industry. Attend as many live sporting events as you can and learn how the arena and stadiums operate. Study the different promotions, giveaways and in game entertainment each team offers. Team … Continue reading

Why Every NFL Team Needs to Hire a Social Media Expert to Oversee All of Their Players Accounts

athlete tweeting

We see it everyday. An athlete will put their “foot in their mouth” and not even realize it until they press send. By then, it’s too late and has already gone viral (within seconds). As long as it takes to build up a positive reputation, you can destroy it with one tweet. If you have to think twice about sending a tweet, it probably shouldn’t be sent in the first place… As NFL teams have people in charge of their social media accounts, they need experts overseeing each and every player on the team to make sure inappropriate things aren’t being said and when it does, cleaning up messes quickly. Although fans worship athletes, those same athletes are still employees who work for a professional franchise. When NFL teams employ a player, they are representing the entire organization, on and off the field. Those “fans” and “followers” of that athlete are just like potential customers of a normal business who buy tickets, jerseys, merchandise, concessions and every thing else. If athletes spent more time interacting with people who praise them and not worrying about the “haters” creating “twitter wars”, it’s a fact they would sell more jerseys and merchandise. It … Continue reading

Why Every Athlete Needs a Virtual Office and How I Got Terrell Owens His Wallet Back

I often explain to athletes all the time why they need a virtual office and someone handling all their website inquires and phone calls. There are plenty of wasted opportunities when a company is looking to contact an athlete for an appearance or speaking engagement and  find it difficult to locate a direct contact for them. This was a problem I saw in this industry and explain to as many athletes as I can about the importance of having someone actively managing their online requests and inquiries. Not only are they losing opportunities, but “wallets” as well. I couldn’t give a better example than what recently happened from a call I took the other day on 855.OWENS.81., the contact number on Terrell Owens’ official website. While eating dinner with friends at Gyukaku in Beverly Hills, the phone rang and I answered. It was a man on the other line looking to get in contact with “Terrell Owens”. I explained that I managed his appearances and marketing. With his strong accent, it was hard to understand what he was trying to say. While explaining that I was at dinner, he kept asking if this was the best contact for “Terrell Eldorado Owens” … Continue reading

Sports Team Marketing Mistakes, Ideas and Recommendations

Shea Stadium

Being a life long sports fan, I have probably been to over 1,000 live sporting events including NFL ,NBA, NHL, MLB and minor league baseball games. My Dad took me to my first games at Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium and the Meadowlands back in 1985. If I was lucky and the game went late, I didn’t have to go to school the next day. 🙂 The more games I went to, the more I got to understand how the sports business works and realized what could be changed or enhanced. There is much more to the sports industry than the 9 innings and 4 quarters we sit and watch. We have come a long way since my first games in 1985. Now with social media and the Internet, it’s so much easier to interact with fans and find out exactly what they want to enhance their sporting event experience (besides winning a championship, of course). I have found that many teams still lack the social media expertise, customer interaction, make many Internet mistakes, as well as in-game marketing blunders. I will outline some of my observations and some recommendations for your team, if you are reading this. Domain Name Mistakes … Continue reading

How a Celebrity Can Profit from an Official Website

Official Celebrity Websites

Being a celebrity booking agent, I have a pretty good pulse on the industry. If you are a celebrity or athlete with a following and fan base, your website should be an entire separate entity that works as a cash register, while you do what you do best. An official website for a celebrity should be treated as their biggest marketing tool they have. Yes, Twitter and Facebook are huge marketing vehicles, but all traffic should lead right back to the official website. This way you control the message. With millions of pages on the Internet, often times people read and believe the first few results on Google. I talk to Hollywood agents all the time, even “marketing agents” who still don’t have an official website for their clients. That just baffles me that they are missing a huge opportunity to make their clients happy and even more important, “revenue”. Even if they do have an official site, 99% still aren’t monetizing the traffic to the fullest. If you are a celebrity with a fan base, you are a “brand” that can easily generate revenue off the field, court, runway or stage (for whichever you are famous for). When you … Continue reading
